Dia nacional de Francia en Paris – French national day in Paris

Ya algunas semanas atras hice un pequeño tour a Estocolmo (Suecia) junto con 2 amigos. Es una ciudad bonita aunque bastante cara (igual que Paris casi casi). Sobre todo la parte del puerto me encanto. El clima cambiaba a cada rato (lluvia, calor, frio, aire, calor). Lo que mas me sorprendio era que yo andaba en chamarra (y con frio) mientras gran parte de los suecos tenian shorts y playeras puestos. El primer dia caminamos por todas partes de la ciudad, por horas. Al segundo dia la pasamos un poco mas tranquilo. Pasamos mucho tiempo en uno de los montones de cafés (al menos uno en cada esquina). Hmm que rico el té alla ;) Mucha seleccion y todo. Los pasteles se parecen a los de Alemania.

Particularmente estos roles (Kanelbullar: masa de levadura con canela y azucar) nos encantaban (tanto que traje varios a Francia). Ademas habia pan integral muy rico. Creo que es un poco la cultura del norte que tiene estas cosas (pasteles, pan, cafe, té, parte de la comida) en comun. Lo que falta en esta ciudad es en definitiva: Supermercados (encontramos solo uno en todo el centro y ni era muy grande) y bancas (la unica manera de sentarse era en un café!). Hasta ahora me pregunto donde se vende el pan porque no vimos ninguna panaderia ni en Estocolmo ni en Uppsala. En cambio los 7eleven (cadena de tiendas tipo Oxxo o como las de las gasolineras) sobran en Estocolmo (uno en cada esquina, igual que los cafés) ;). Ahi es donde conseguiamos pan en las mañanas. El dia 3 la pasamos en Uppsala, una ciudad chiquitita que queda a 45min en tren. Habia una catedral, una uni y la casa de Carl de Linné (un botanico). De hecho hacia un clima tan bonito que nos pasamos unas 2-3 horas en un café sentados debajo de una sombrilla con un pastel y un té/ café. Por tanto ya estuvo cerrada la casa de Linné cuando salimos de ahi… Igual la pasamos rechido!!! El ultimo dia anduvimos en un barco por el archipiélago de Estocolmo.

Already a few weeks ago I did a short trip to Stockholm (Sweden) with two friends of mine. It’s really an amazing city, even if it’s pretty expensive (nearly as expensive as Paris). I liked particularly the harbour area. The weather changed all the time (rain, warm, cold, wind). What surprised me most was me wearing a jacket (and still feeling cold) while the majority of the Swedes could be seen with shorts and t-shirts. On our first day we walked the city center up and down for hours. The day after we had a slower start and spent quite a long time in one of the innumerable cafés. I really enjoyed the great choice of tea. Pastry stuff is similar to the German’s. I loved the Kanelbullars (cinnamon buns) so much that I took several of them home to France. Apart from that the bread over there is pretty good. I think over all it’s the Nordic culture that have these things (pastries, bread, coffee, tea and part of the food) in common. Nevertheless in this city there is definitely a lack of: Supermarkets (we only found one in the whole center and it wasn’t even particularly big) and benches to sit down (the only way to have a seat somewhere is in a café!). Until now I wonder where they sell bread as we couldn’t spot any bakery neither in Stockholm nor in Uppsala. Instead of that there are 7elevens (like the Oxxo stores or the ones of the gas stations) in every corner. That’s where we got our bread from in the mornings. Our third day we spent in Uppsala, a small town about 45min away by train. They had a cathedral, a university and Carl of Linné’s (a botanist) house. Actually the weather was great so we were hanging around in a café like 2 or 3 hours, having some tea/coffee and pastries. When we left we discovered that Linné’s house was already closed…but we had a great day anyway!!!! On the last day we did a tour on a boat, cruising around in Stockholm’s archipelago.

Ultimamente me toco esperar un rato en St Lazare (en el norte de Paris) por lo que tomé unas fotos. Luego queria ir a comer en el barrio japonés cerca de la opera. Saliendo del metro me encontraba en medio de una manifestacion palestina con policia armada y todo…

Recently I had to wait some time at St Lazare (Northern Paris), so I decided to take some pics. Afterwards I wanted to go for dinner to the Japanese Quarter next to the opera. Leaving the metro station I got right into a Palestinian demonstration with armed policemen.

Gracias a mi trabajo tuve la oportunidad de visitar el mercado de navidad de Frankfurt (Alemania). Parecia uno de los mas grandes, se extendia sobre 2 plazas grandes e incluso parte de las callejas cerca. Finalmente pude conseguir mis tan amados Lebkuchen (pan de jengibre) en todas formas y tipos! Ademas habia los tipicos vinos (tintos) calientes con especias, un poco como ponche. Hasta habia Feuerzangenbowle (foto mas abajo), un tipo especial de vino tinto seco y especias. A diferencia del vino caliente normal, el vino se calienta en una caldera u otro recipiente y encima de este se quema un cono de azucar, empapado con ron. El azucar se convierte en caramel y gotea en el vino. Aparte se vendian artesania, decoracion de navidad, salchicas, rosquillas (Brezeln) saladas o con chocolate, brochetas de frutas con una capa de chocolate, almendras tostadas,…

Thanks to my job I had the opportunity to see Frankfurt’s (Germany) christmas market. It seemed to be one of the largest, it was spread over two huge squares and parts of some alleys next to them. Finally I could get my beloved Lebkuchen (gingerbread) in every imaginable form and type! Besides there was this hot spiced wine, a bit like punch. They even offered Feuerzangenbowle (see pic further below). Actually it’s kind of similiar to the hot spiced wine. It just differs from the “normal” hot spiced wine in the sense that you heat it in a caldron or another type of pot and above it there’s a cone of sugar soaked by rum. The sugar caramelizes and drops into the red wine below. Apart from that they were selling handcraft stuff, christmas decoration, sausages, pretzels (salted or with a chocolate layer), fruit skewers with chocolate, roasted almonds,…

Al parecer la ultima moda: Almendras tostadas de cualquier sabor. En tiempos pasados solo eran de azucar con algunas especias. Hoy las hay de amaretto, chicle, Red Bull, chocolate de menta, café,… hasta con chile! No sé como lo miden, pero las habia en poco picante, picante y muy picante. Podias probar antes de comprar y entre otras cosas tuve que probar las de chile. Tengo que admitir que las picantes media hora después todavia las sentia en la boca. El vendedor quedaba tan impresionado que toco la campana que tenia (no sé por que la verdad).

Obviously the latest fashion: Toasted almonds of whatever flavor. In former times they were just sugared and had some spices. Today they were available in amaretto, chewing gum, Red Bull, mint chocolate, coffee flavor,… even with chili! No idea how they measure it, but you could get them less hot, hot, very hot. Before buying you could try them and amongst others I had definitely to taste the chili ones. I have to admit that I still felt the hot almonds half an hour later. The vendor was so impressed that he rang the bell he had(actually I’m no quite sure why).

Ya llevo mas de 3 años viviendo en Francia.  Sin embargo es ahorita que me mandan cada semana por algunos dias a Frankfurt (Alemania) junto con mis compañeros de trabajo (franceses) que me doy otra vez cuenta de muchas costumbres franceses que ya solo en ocasiones noto.  Ademas me hace recordar el tiempo justo cuando apenas llegué a Francia.

Una de las cosas mas importantes de un pais siempre es la comida. Como la mayoria de los franceses es muy exigente en este sentido, escucho muchas quejas en cuanto a la calidad, la cantidad y mas que nada cosas que NO hay en el comedor a donde vamos en Frankfurt. Primero les comenté a mis compañeros que se tratara de un muy buen comedor comparandolo con lo que conozco de otros comedores alemanes.  Por supuesto no se deja por nada comparar con un comedor francés que a mis ojos se me hace mas restaurante que comedor.

Algunas costumbres muy franceses relacionadas con la comida:

- El yogur parece un alimento basico para un francés. A menudo ni cuenta como postre, sino se come adicionalmente a ello.  El chiste es que contrariamente a Francia no hay una seleccion grande de todo tipo de yogur en los comedores alemanes. Un postre PERTENECE a una comida y si vamos a un restaurante después de trabajar hasta la cena lo incluye…

- Una comida consiste la mayoria de las veces en 3 partes: Entrada, comida y postre. Por eso en muchos restaurantes franceses siempre se ofrece algun menu (a opcion por supuesto). Antes de sentarse se pregunta al camarero si queda lugar para cierta cantidad de personas. Solo cuando te indican donde colocarse entonces si puedes.

- No solo en los restaurantes, pero también en muchos lugares publicos como el metro, camion etc se aplica una regla no escrita: Por favor se comporten SILENCIOSOS, susurren o comuniquense de cualquier manera mientras no molesten a su entorno por algun tipo de ruido. Recuerdo bien que fui una vez con mas alemanes y un francés a un restaurante, estabamos conversando de manera NORMAL y todos se dieron la vuelta para ver que onda con nosotros! Subida al tren en las mañanas hay momentos en los cuales podrias oir caer una aguja al piso asi de silencioso esta. Todos muy ocupados leyendo, escuchando musica (con audifonos) o trabajando con compu portatil.

- La propina en los restaurantes es muy poca ya que muchas veces ya esta incluido en los precios de la comida. Se deja muy poco o nada en las mesas. Encima de todo encuentro que ya sale lo suficiente caro todo lo que es comida en Francia y sobre todo en la region de Paris.

- La carne: Hay carne molida de res que se come cruda. Junto con sal y otras cosas. En cambio no pueden entender como los alemanes pueden comerse carne molida de cerdo untada en pan con cebollas, pimienta y sal. Carne de res y carne de cordero en muchas ocasiones e como – segun yo- casi crudo, o sea que todavia sangre y cada lado de la chuleta solo parece bien hecha del exterior. Una vez pide cordero en un comedor y me llego tan tan crudo que ni podia diferenciar la grasa de la carne. Guuuaaac!!!

- Queso: El queso representa otro alimento de base de un francés (con muy pocas excepciones). Se come después de la comida (incluso a veces reemplaza al postre) y antes del postre y no solo un cachito, sino un pedazote. Algo incomprensible para mi. Pura grasa y eso después de la comida. No es que no me gusta, la verdad hay unos muy ricos y hay un chorro de quesos diferentes, pero por favor no después de mi comida.

- La ensalada se come antes de la comida (en Alemania mas bien después)

- El uso de mayonesa… la encuentras en muchisimas ensaladas, con gambas en casi cualquier sandwich que puedes comprar y eso que no me gusta la mayonesa.

- Mostaza: Esta bien rica la mostaza de Dijon, pero no veo el por qué comermela con cada tipo de carne (como muchos franceses).

- Chile/aji: Desgraciadamente casi desconocido en los platos franceses. Solo cuando vas a un lugar marroqui, ahi si hay.

- En los comedores he observado que mucha gente añade pepinitos en vinagre (muuuuy acidos) a la comida

- Pan: Forma parte de cualquier comida (baguettte!!!)

-Desayuno: A menudo se comen sus croissants, pan de chocolate o baguette sin usar platos. El té o el café no se toma en una tasa normal, sino en un plato hondo (cuenco ;) y algo lo que todavia no puedo imitar: Hunden una esquina de su croissant/pan en el té o café antes de meterselo en la boca!

I’ve been living in France for more than 3 years now. Nevertheless it’s now that they send me every week for several days to Frankfurt (Germany) together with my colleagues that I realize again a bunch of French customs that I hardly notice anymore. Besides it makes me remember the time when I just arrived in France.
One of the most important things of a country is always food. As the majority of the French is pretty demanding in that sense, I can hear loads of complaints as to quality, quantity and particularly things you CAN’T get in the canteen where we go to in Frankfurt.

First of all I told my colleagues that this was a very good canteen compared to several other German ones. Of course they are nothing compared to French canteens which in my eyes seem to be more restaurant like.

Some very French customs related to food:

- Yoghurt seems to be part of the basic French food. Often it doesn’ t even count as dessert, but they eat it additionally to that. The thing is that in contrast to France, there is no huge selection of yoghurt in the German cantines. A dessert belongs to a dish and when going to a restaurant after work, dinner also includes dessert.

- A dish mostly consists of 3 parts: Starter, dish and dessert. That is why most French restaurants always offer a menu (at one’s own option normally). Before taking a seat you have to ask the waiter if there is a table left for a certain amount of people. Not before they tell you where to sit, you can really sit down.

- Not only in restaurants, but also in many public places like on the metro, bus you can apply the following rule: Please keep SILENCE, whisper or communicate the way you like as long as you don’t bother your environment by whatever type of noise.
I still remember that I had been to a restaurant with other Germans and a French guy, we were talking NORMALLY and the people around us turned their heads towards us to see what happens! In the morning being on a train it’s occasionally so silent that you could hear a needle falling to the ground. Everybody is busy reading, listening to music (with headphones) or working on their laptops.

- Tipping in restaurants is very little as it is mostly already included in the dish prices. You leave very little or nothing on the table. Apart from that to my mind food is already expensive enough in the Paris region.

- Meat: There is minced beaf meat that is eaten rawly here. It comes together with salt and other stuff. French for their part can’t get how Germans can eat minced porc meat on bread with onions, pepper and salt. Beef and lamb meat often arrive –according to me- rawly, that means that they are still bloody and every side just seems to be well-done from the outside. Once I got lamb meat in a cantine and it was actually so raw that is was just too hard to tell which part was fat and what was meat. Ughhh!!!

- Cheese: Cheese also represents basic food for a French (with very few exceptions). You eat it after lunch (it even replaces the dessert from time to time) and before the dessert. Usually it comes in big pieces. Something I just can’t get it. It’s pure fat AFTER the main dish. It’s not that I don’t like cheese, actually there are some really delicious ones and there are son many of them, but please not after the main dish.

- You have your salad before your dish (in Germany it’s more afterwards that you eat it)

- The application of mayonnaise…you can find it in most salads, with prawns and every kind of sandwich you can buy and I can’t stand mayonnaise…

- Mustard: The mustard of Dijon is really very delicious, but I don’t see why I should eat it on all type of meat (just like loads of French do).

- Chili: Unfortunately almost unknown in French dishes. Available only if you eat at a Moroccan restaurant.

- In the canteens I have observed that many people add gherkins to their lunch.

- Bread: Is part of every kind of dish (baguette!!!)

-Breakfast: Often they have corissants, chocolate bread or baguette without using plates. You drink your tea or coffee out of a bowl instead of a mug or cup and there’s is still something that I can’ imitate: They dip one corner of their croissant/ bread right INTO it before putting it into their mouths!!!
